Types of Batteries Produced by Global Manufacturers in 2024

A Capgemini Research Institute survey reveals that in 2024, global battery producers manufactured lithium-ion batteries at a rate of 98%.

Lithium-ion is a rechargeable battery type commonly used in various electronic devices.

Next, 18% of producers manufactured lead-acid batteries. Lead-acid batteries, also known as car batteries, are generally used in motor vehicles.

Furthermore, 14% of global producers also manufactured nickel-metal hydride batteries. This type of rechargeable battery is known to be frequently used in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).

In addition, 10% of producers manufactured lithium-sulfur batteries. This rechargeable battery type is considered an alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to its applicability in electronic devices.

Moreover, global producers also manufactured three other battery types with percentages not exceeding 2%. These battery types are nickel-cadmium, sodium-ion, and zinc-air.

Nickel-cadmium is a rechargeable battery usable in various electronic devices and medical equipment.

Sodium-ion batteries are similar to lithium-ion batteries. In their development, this type of battery has become an alternative for electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, zinc-air batteries are based on zinc metal and oxygen from the air. These batteries are often used in hearing aids.

“The percentages indicate the share of battery producers currently producing the specified battery chemistry,” stated the Capgemini Research Institute.

The survey was conducted by the Capgemini Research Institute in September-October 2024. A total of 338 senior executives from battery manufacturing companies in 15 countries participated as respondents in this survey.
