Several Mie Sedaap instant noodle products have been banned in several countries due to reports of hazardous substances in some variants.
Most recently, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) recalled two more Mie Sedaap variants from circulation on Tuesday (11/10/2022). The SFA stated that they found chili powder contaminated with ethylene oxide in the products.
This brings the total number of banned Mie Sedaap variants in Singapore to six. Previously, four other Mie Sedaap variants had been recalled.
In September 2022, the Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety (CFS) also ordered the cessation of sales of Mie Sedaap Korean Spicy Chicken noodles imported from Indonesia. The reason was that routine CFS checks found samples of the noodles, seasoning, and chili powder containing ethylene oxide.
In July 2022, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration reportedly confiscated 4.04 tons of Mie Sedaap cup noodles from Indonesia because they contained ethylene oxide in excess of the country's standards.

In response, the Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) urged the Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) to update food safety standards.
YLKI Executive Board Member Sudaryatmo said that BPOM needs to review the implementation of maximum residue limits for pesticides in food, as has been done in other countries.
"One consideration is that many other countries have banned it, and of course there is evidence," said Sudaryatmo, as quoted by BBC Indonesia, Wednesday (12/10/2022).
