Katadata Insight Center (KIC) released the report 'Katadata Indonesia Middle Class Insight' (KIMCI) at the IDE Katadata Future Forum 2026 event at the Ballroom of the Jakarta Theater, Jakarta, Wednesday (15/4/2026).

The KIMCI report contains research results on the condition, behavior, and perceptions of the middle class, which can serve as a basis for formulating strategies and policies to strengthen resilience, drive growth, and support economic and social development in Indonesia.

In terms of financial behavior, KIC found that the Indonesian middle class is generally oriented towards aspects of protecting or safeguarding financial resilience.

This is evident from the large number of middle-class people who save and invest to face emergency or unexpected needs.

"The main motivation for saving and investing is dominated by the need to be prepared," said KIC in its report.

Here are the details of the motivations of the Indonesian middle class in saving and investing, according to KIC's survey:

Emergency/unexpected needs: 66.8% of respondents
Achieving financial freedom: 39.7%
Education costs: 35.3%
Protecting assets from inflation: 33%
Vacations/travel: 30.4%
Additional income: 30.1%
Medical/health costs: 25.5%
Developing a business: 22.3%
Home renovation: 14.8%
Down payment for a house: 9.3%
Others: 1.5%

KIC conducted this survey in the fourth quarter of 2025-first quarter of 2026 on 1,000 middle-class respondents.

The respondents were aged between 18-60 years with an average monthly household expenditure of Rp2 million to Rp10 million, referring to the definition of the middle class from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
