According to a report by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), there were 4.5 million micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia in 2023. These businesses employed 9.84 million people.
The BPS defines MSMEs as processing/manufacturing industries with fewer than 20 employees per unit.
West Java had the highest number of MSMEs nationally, with 977,471 units, representing 21.71% of the total number of MSMEs in Indonesia.
This was followed by Central Java with 862,926 units and East Java with 641,639 units.
"Java Island has better access to resources, raw materials, and markets," wrote the BPS in its report, *2023 Profile of Micro and Small Industries*.
Meanwhile, the regions with the fewest MSMEs are located in eastern Indonesia, as shown in the accompanying graph.
