The Indonesian government has banned the sale of individual cigarettes. This is stipulated in Government Regulation (PP) Number 28 of 2024, enacted on July 26, 2024.
Article 434 of the regulation prohibits the sale of tobacco products individually, except for cigars and electronic cigarettes.
This regulation will likely impact teenage smokers, as they generally consume less than a pack of cigarettes per day.
According to a Ministry of Health survey, in 2023, Indonesian smokers aged 10-14 consumed an average of 7.75 cigarettes per day.
In the 15-19 age group, the average consumption was 9.18 cigarettes per day, less than a pack, which typically contains 12-20 cigarettes.
Furthermore, starting this year, the government prohibits the sale of white cigarettes in packs containing fewer than 20 cigarettes.
This is stipulated in Article 433 of PP Number 28 of 2024, which states, "Anyone producing and/or importing machine-made white cigarettes is prohibited from packaging less than 20 cigarettes in each pack."
