Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted again this morning, spewing ash approximately 700 meters into the air.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at 08:23 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 9 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 700 meters above the peak or 2,284 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the north. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on January 17, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 28 eruption quakes with an amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 20-70 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 pyroclastic flow quake with an amplitude of 47.3 mm and a duration of 155 seconds, and 9 rockfall quakes with an amplitude of 23-47.3 mm and a duration of 51-211 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 6-kilometer radius to the North and Northeast.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 71 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara has experienced the most eruptions with 32 eruptions.
