Indonesia has the highest number of active volcanoes in the world, according to the Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program.

The report notes that there were 55 active volcanoes in the Indonesian archipelago from 1950 to June 5, 2022. Some of these include Mount Dukono, Mount Ibu, Mount Semeru, Mount Karangetang, Mount Lewotolok, Mount Merapi, and Mount Krakatau.

Japan and the United States follow, with 44 and 42 active volcanoes respectively.

Active volcanoes in Japan include Mount Suwanosejima and Mount Aira. Examples of active volcanoes in the United States are Mount Semisopochnoi, Mount Great Sitkin, Mount Pavlof, and Mount Kilauea.

The Smithsonian Institution Global Volcanism Program has recorded 79 countries worldwide with volcanoes.

The active volcanoes in this list are those located within a country's borders, on shared borders or territories, in remote areas, or within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
