Warning! Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon (Wednesday, January 17, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday (17/1/2024) at 17:23 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 13 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 1,500 meters above the peak (3,084 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with moderate to thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 17, 2024, from 06:00 to 12:00 WITA showed 11 eruption quakes with an amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and a duration of 22-178 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 5 pyroclastic flow quakes with an amplitude of 19.2-47.3 mm and a duration of 84-150 seconds, and 6 rockfall quakes with an amplitude of 7.4-32.5 mm and a duration of 60-233 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 6-kilometer radius to the north and northeast.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 75 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara has experienced the most eruptions with 36 eruptions.
