Mount Marapi Erupts Monday Morning, Alert Level Raised

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Monday, February 19, 2024, at 09:57 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). This marks the third eruption in the past week.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the eruption was not visually observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 11.1 millimeters and a duration of 28 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's alert level remains at Level III (Siaga, or Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB on February 19, 2024, showed 25 instances of tremor with amplitudes ranging from 1.7 to 7.2 millimeters and durations of 29 to 247 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 3 instances of deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.1 to 3.2 millimeters, S-P intervals of 1.1 to 1.7 seconds, and durations of 9 to 13 seconds, as well as 1 instance of continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5 to 3 millimeters, predominantly 1.5 millimeters.

The PVMBG urges residents around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists to avoid entering and refrain from any activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

In 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 222 volcanic eruptions/eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra has experienced the most eruptions, with a total of 60.
