Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Afternoon, Volcanic Ash Reaches Approximately 1,500 Meters

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at 12:30 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono had only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,500 meters above the peak or 2,587 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on February 21, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 31 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4-27 millimeters and durations of 28.62-88.2 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 6 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-34 millimeters, S-P intervals of 9.46-21.58 seconds, and durations of 62.26-74.8 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5-4 millimeters, dominant at 1 millimeter.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 235 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra had the most eruptions (67 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 5 times.
