Mount Marapi Erupts Again Tonight, Eruption Height 1,000 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 9:57 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 5 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,000 meters above the peak or 3,891 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 9.1 millimeters and a duration of 42 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on March 27, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIB showed 2 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.4-3.7 millimeters and durations of 8-9 seconds.

Then, there were 3 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-4.4 millimeters and durations of 11-13 seconds, and 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5-1.5 millimeters, dominant at 1 millimeter.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter or carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 443 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra has had the most eruptions with 148 eruptions.
