The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded 31 natural disasters in Indonesia in the last week, from May 20-26, 2024.

Head of BNPB's Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, stated that these disasters were predominantly wet hydrometeorological events.

"We thought that in May, Indonesia would face hot conditions, although not as hot as last year's El Niño, but it turns out it's still raining," said Abdul in a virtual press conference on Monday (27/5/2024).

Flooding was the most frequent disaster, accounting for 25 incidents or 80% of the total number of disasters in the last week.

During the same period, there were also four landslides, one extreme weather event, and one forest and land fire (karhutla). BNPB reported that these disasters were spread across Indonesia, from Sumatra to Papua.

"Spatially, the distribution, although not very extensive, shows that Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua experienced disasters in general," said Abdul.

BNPB recorded that these natural disasters resulted in 12 deaths, mostly from landslides. One person was injured, and 131,779 people were displaced or affected.

These disasters also caused material losses, including 26,769 flooded houses, 197 damaged houses, 10 damaged bridges, 1 damaged educational facility, 1 damaged health facility, and 4 damaged places of worship.
