Bali's G20 Summit Faces Waste Management Crisis: Identifying the Biggest Polluting Companies!

Waste has become a major concern in the lead-up to the G20 Summit in Bali in November 2022.

Bali is one of the provinces that generates a significant amount of waste, including plastic waste. According to a Sungai Watch report titled *Impact Report October 2020-December 2021*, Bali produces 333,336 kilograms of inorganic waste.

This inorganic waste is predominantly composed of 89% plastic, 8% glass, 2% fabric, and 1% metal. The report notes that 550 parent companies and over 800 brands contribute to inorganic waste in Bali, the majority of which is plastic waste.

Sungai Watch reports that Danone is the largest contributor to waste, with 27,486 pieces of waste, or 12% of the total pieces analyzed. Of this amount, 14,147 items are single-use plastic drinking cups and 12,352 items are bottled drinking water.

Following Danone, the next largest contributors in Bali are Wings Surya with 14,409 pieces of waste, Orang Tua with 14,25 pieces, Santos Jaya Abadi with 11,196 pieces, and Unilever with 9,034 pieces of waste.

In preparation for the G20 Summit in Bali, the government has undertaken various preparations, including the construction of new integrated waste management facilities (TPST).

According to the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut B. Pandjaitan, waste management in Bali must be completed before the peak event of the Indonesian G20 Summit Presidency in November in Bali.

"Bali must be clean. We target that all new TPST construction will be completed by the end of July 2022 and operational between August and November 2022," he said, as quoted from the official KLHK website on Wednesday (9/3/2022).
