The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) reported that total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from Indonesia's industrial sector reached 238.1 million tons of CO2e in 2022. This figure increased from 222.9 million tons of CO2e in 2021.

Based on its components, industrial energy use contributed the most emissions, namely 152.2 million tons of CO2e or 64% of total industrial GHG emissions. This figure increased significantly from 125.1 million tons of CO2e in 2021.

The second largest component was industrial waste, emitting 56.1 million tons of CO2e or 24% of total industrial emissions. Positively, this figure decreased from 68.6 million tons of CO2e in 2021.

The third component was industrial process and product use (IPPU), contributing 29.7 million tons of CO2e or 12%. This volume increased from 29 million tons of CO2e in 2021.

Over the past five years, industrial GHG emissions in 2022 were still below 2019's total of 240.7 million tons of CO2e. Emissions in 2019 were the highest in the last eight years. The decrease in 2020-2021 is believed to be due to activity restrictions caused by Covid-19.

Kemenperin stated that industrial sector GHG emissions in Indonesia from 2015-2022 accounted for 8-20% of total national GHG emissions.

"Therefore, massive and structured decarbonization efforts are needed," said Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita at the 2023 Ministry of Industry Working Meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday (11/10/2023).
