West Sumatra Police confirmed that 23 out of 75 climbers died as a result of the eruption of Mount Marapi, West Sumatra, on Tuesday night (December 5, 2023).

Based on data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mount Marapi has been on alert status or level II since August 3, 2011.

This status resulted in a recommendation that the community around Marapi and visitors or tourists are not allowed to conduct activities or approach the mountain within a 3-kilometer radius of the crater or summit.
