The earthquake that struck West Nusa Tenggara on Sunday, August 5, 2018, resulted in dozens of deaths, hundreds of injuries, and widespread property damage. Thousands were displaced to safer locations, and a tsunami warning further fueled panic and trauma among the population.
According to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the worst-affected areas were North Lombok Regency, East Lombok Regency, and Mataram City. As of 2:30 AM WIB, the total death toll in NTB reached 82. Of this number, 65 were from North Lombok, 9 from West Lombok, 4 from Mataram City, and 2 each from Central Lombok and East Lombok.
Most of the fatalities resulted from collapsed buildings following two earthquakes, measuring 6.4 SR and a subsequent 7.0 SR aftershock. This earthquake in NTB is expected to significantly impact the local economy.
