Recent 4.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Jayapura City

A 4.5 magnitude (M) earthquake struck Jayapura City. The earthquake's epicenter was inland. "The epicenter was located 8 km northwest of Jayapura City, and this earthquake was felt; information should be disseminated to the public," wrote BMKG (Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency) on its official website, February 9, 2023.

The earthquake occurred at 17:48:09. It was located at a depth of 10 kilometers and did not have the potential to cause a tsunami. The earthquake's coordinates were 2.47°S (South Latitude) and 140.68°E (East Longitude).

The earthquake was felt on the MMI scale in Jayapura City and Jayapura Regency with intensities of IV and III, respectively. An intensity of IV means the earthquake was felt by several people but did not cause damage or accidents. Light hanging objects swayed, and window panes vibrated.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 40 significant earthquakes felt by the public across Indonesia in the last week, varying in magnitude and depth.
