Mount Dukono Erupts Again Today, Eruption Reaches 1,250 Meters

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at 12:37 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono had only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 1,250 meters above the peak or 2,337 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 6 millimeters and a duration of 82.75 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 3, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 13 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4-14 millimeters and durations of 37.25-58.45 seconds.

Then, there were 3 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-15 millimeters, s-p 32.86-44.37 seconds, and durations of 101.6-125.98 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5-3 millimeters, dominant at 1 millimeter.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 472 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra had the most eruptions (157 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 13 times.
