Indicator: Deforestation Rated as the Most Influential Factor in Climate Change

Millennials and Generation Z consider deforestation the biggest contributor to climate change. This is based on the results of a survey conducted by Indikator Politik Indonesia and the Indonesia Cerah Foundation on the perceptions of young and first-time voters (Generation Z and Millennials) regarding the climate crisis in Indonesia.

The survey results show that deforestation received the highest score of 1.278% from Generation Z and Millennial respondents. In addition, the economic industrial sector was also considered a major contributor to climate change, with a score of 0.786%. This was followed by the daily use of single-use plastics and the logging/timber industry, with scores of 0.742% and 0.652%, respectively.

Other factors considered significant contributors to climate change include vehicles using solar/diesel fuel (0.408%), the agricultural economic sector (0.385%), emissions from large vehicles such as trucks (0.372%), and emissions from cars (0.319%).

The survey scores ranged from 0 to 3, representing the average of the rankings. Rank 1 received a score of 3, Rank 2 a score of 2, Rank 3 a score of 1, and anything outside of ranks 1-3 received a score of 0. Unanswered or misunderstood questions were left blank.

The survey was conducted from September 9-16, 2021, involving 4,020 respondents: 3,216 aged 17-26 (Generation Z) and 804 aged 27-35 (Millennials), spread across all Indonesian provinces. A stratified multistage random sampling method was used, with a margin of error of approximately 2.7% at a 95% confidence level.
