Researcher at the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Tubagus Solihuddin, revealed that various areas on Java Island are experiencing land subsidence.

Based on geospatial data for the period 2017-2023, Tubagus said, the highest rate of land subsidence was recorded in Demak, Central Java, reaching 16 centimeters (cm) per year.

According to Tubagus' research citing 2017-2023 geospatial data, the following are nine areas on Java Island experiencing land subsidence:

Jakarta (DKI Jakarta): 15 cm/year
Sidoarjo (East Java): 14 cm/year
Pekalongan (Central Java): 11 cm/year
Surabaya (East Java): 8 cm/year
Brebes (Central Java): 7 cm/year
Serang (Banten): 6 cm/year
Cirebon (West Java): 6 cm/year
Indramayu (West Java): 6 cm/year

This finding, Tubagus continued, shows that the North Coast (Pantura) region of Java is facing a real crisis.

Because, the challenges faced by Pantura are not just erosion, abrasion, and flooding, but also rising sea levels and land subsidence.

Going forward, Tubagus urges that coastal management policies must be based on scientific research, credible data, and prioritize ecosystem balance rather than just infrastructure development.
