Papua is the region with the best land quality in Indonesia in 2024.
This is evident from the Land Quality Index (IKL) compiled by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).
IKL is an index that measures the impact of human activities in utilizing land, including peatland use, land-use change for settlements, agriculture, plantations, and mining.
This index is expressed in a score ranging from 0-100 points. A high index number reflects success in maintaining forest cover and sustainable land management.
In 2024, the highest IKL scores are generally found in the provinces of Papua Island.
"The Papua ecoregion recorded very high IKL values, such as West Papua (100 points), Papua (100 points), and South Papua (92.36 points), reflecting the still very well-preserved land quality," said KLHK in its report.
"However, pressure from plantation expansion, infrastructure development, and mining is starting to emerge in some areas," it continued.
On the other hand, low IKL scores, around 50 points and below, are generally found in the provinces of Java and Sumatra.
"The Java ecoregion faces severe land degradation due to uncontrolled urbanization and agricultural land expansion," said KLHK.
"In the Sumatra ecoregion, land preparation activities for plantations and mining are the main factors contributing to the decline in IKL values. Provinces such as Riau (51.25 points), South Sumatra (44.52 points), and Lampung (38.49 points) recorded low IKL values due to pressure from agricultural and industrial activities," it added.
