Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra provinces were hit by floods and landslides at the end of November 2025.

According to research by the Indonesian Forum for Budget Transparency (FITRA), during 2014-2024, North Sumatra Province experienced the largest loss of protected forest areas compared to Aceh and West Sumatra.

"From 2014 to 2024, the most severe loss of protected forest occurred in North Sumatra, reaching -40% in 2024," FITRA explained in its analysis.

FITRA obtained this data by processing data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

In the same period, Aceh Province became the region with the largest loss of conservation forests compared to North Sumatra and West Sumatra.

"Conservation forests in Aceh have shrunk by up to 27% or minus 282 thousand hectares in the last 10 years. Meanwhile, protected forests also experienced a reduction of 6% or minus 113 thousand hectares," FITRA stated.

FITRA added that the total area of forests that should be protected, not production forests, lost in Aceh Province reached 395 thousand hectares.

Overall, during the 2014-2024 period, the reduction in the area of protected and conservation forests in the three provinces affected by floods and landslides reached 1.29 million hectares.

"This forestry statistics data is clear evidence that forestry governance in Indonesia has experienced structural failure, especially in the function of protecting conservation areas and protected forests," FITRA stated.
