According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), there will be 660 forestry companies in Indonesia in 2025.
This number consists of companies holding Hak Pengusahaan Hutan (Forest Concession Rights, HPH), Pembudidaya Tanaman Kehutanan (Forestry Plant Cultivators, HPHT), and Penangkaran Tumbuhan dan Satwa Liar (Wildlife and Plant Captive Breeding/Conservation, TSL) companies.
HPH refers to companies holding a Perizinan Berusaha Pemanfaatan Hutan (Business Permit for Forest Utilization, PBPH) to utilize timber forest products from naturally growing forests (natural forests).
"Their activities include felling or harvesting, enrichment, nursery operations, planting, maintenance, security, processing, and marketing of timber forest products," BPS explained in its report.
HPHT refers to companies holding a PBPH for Plantation Forests, comprising Hutan Tanaman Industri (Industrial Plantation Forest, HTI) companies, Perum Perhutani, and other companies, to utilize timber forest products from cultivated plants (plantation forests).
According to BPS, HPHT activities include land preparation, nursery operations, planting, maintenance, security, harvesting, processing, and marketing of timber forest products.
Meanwhile, TSL refers to companies engaged in the breeding of wild plants and animals through propagation and rearing while maintaining the purity of their species.
In 2025, out of 660 forestry companies, 370 companies were HPHT (56.06%), 256 companies were HPH (38.79%), and 34 companies were TSL (5.15%).
However, not all of these companies are active. For HPHT companies, for example, only 86.76% of the 370 companies are active, while the rest are temporarily closed.
Furthermore, of the 256 HPH companies, 72.66% are active, while the others are temporarily closed. Meanwhile, 79.41% of the 34 TSL companies are active.
