Indonesia's Bio-Based Intellectual Property Increased in 2023

According to Low Carbon Development Indonesia (LCDI), technological innovation plays a crucial role in protecting and enhancing biodiversity, encompassing research, management, education, and the utilization of biodiversity.

LCDI's findings reveal that between 2013 and 2023, Indonesia registered 1,432 intellectual properties with formally fulfilled publication status, registration, and certification.

Of this number, 339 intellectual properties are based on or related to biodiversity.

By year, biodiversity-based intellectual property stood at only 8 in 2013. This number increased to 38 in 2018 but decreased to 16 in 2021.

However, in 2022 and 2023, there was a significant increase in biodiversity-based intellectual property in Indonesia, reaching 85 and 112 respectively.

LCDI compared this quantity with the significant increase in the United States, based on figures from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in agriculture, horticulture, and forestry services, which rose from 4,129 in 2008 to 6,058 in 2018.

"Currently, Indonesia still needs encouragement in utilizing biodiversity as a source of inspiration, raw materials, and solutions to ecosystem problems through research and innovation," stated LCDI in its Indonesia Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan 2025-2045.
