Mount Marapi Erupts Friday Morning, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Friday, March 29, 2024, at 7:35 AM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak (3,391 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Marapi was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Marapi is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismicity on March 29, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 AM WIB showed 1 tremor event with an amplitude of 2.6 millimeters and a duration of 20 seconds.

Then, there were 2 shallow volcanic earthquakes with an amplitude of 2.1 millimeters and a duration of 7 seconds, and 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 7.6 millimeters, S-P 5.8 seconds, and a duration of 23 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 449 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra has erupted the most, with 150 eruptions.
