Mount Dukono Erupts Again Today, Ash Column Reaches 1,600 Meters

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, March 18, 2024, at 2:51 PM WIT. This is the second eruption in the last week.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column was observed to be approximately 1,600 meters above the peak, or 2,687 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the east. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on March 18, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 5 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7-21 millimeters and durations of 41.34-62.31 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-20 millimeters, S-P arrival times not observed, and durations of 62.09-65.94 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5-2 millimeters, dominant at 1 millimeter.

The PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 414 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra had the most eruptions (139 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 10 times.
