Warning! Mount Marapi Erupts Again This Afternoon (Wednesday, March 27, 2024)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 11:22 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). This is the third eruption in the last week.

According to information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column was observed to reach 1,500 meters above the peak (4,391 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Marapi was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB on March 27, 2024, showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 30.7 millimeters and a duration of 105 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 puffing earthquake with an amplitude of 1.2 millimeters and a duration of 25 seconds, and 1 low-frequency earthquake with an amplitude of 8.5 millimeters and a duration of 24 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi, and climbers/visitors/tourists to avoid entering and carrying out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 439 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra has experienced the most eruptions, with 146 recorded.
