Mount Marapi Erupts Again Today, Ash Reaches 300 Meters

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Friday, March 8, 2024, at 4:06 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 25 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 300 meters above the peak (3,191 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the north. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 3.2 millimeters and a duration of 64 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on March 8, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIB showed 18 puffing events with amplitudes of 1-4 millimeters and durations of 27-158 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 7.4 millimeters, an S-P time of 16.6 seconds, and a duration of 69 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5-1.5 millimeters, predominantly 1 millimeter.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter or carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.
