According to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), Indonesia generated 19.45 million tons of waste in 2022.
Based on province, the highest amount of waste originated from Central Java, reaching 4.25 million tons or 21.85% of the total national waste generation last year.
DKI Jakarta ranked second with 3.11 million tons (15.98%). East Java was third with 1.63 million tons (8.38%), followed by West Java with 1.11 million tons (5.7%) and Riau with 1.05 million tons (5.39%).

The province that generated the least amount of waste in 2022 was West Papua, with only 18,160 tons. Above West Papua were North Kalimantan and West Nusa Tenggara, which generated 20,750 tons and 37,440 tons of waste, respectively.
Type and Source of Waste
By type, the majority of national waste in 2022 consisted of food waste, with a proportion of 41.55%, followed by plastic waste at 18.55%.
Other types of waste included wood/branches (13.27%), paper/cardboard (11.04%), metal (2.86%), fabric (2.54%), glass (1.96%), rubber/leather (1.68%), and other types of waste (6.55%).
By source, the majority or 39.63% of national waste last year originated from households.
Other sources of national waste included commerce at 21.07%, markets at 16.08%, commercial/industrial/other areas at 7.14%, public facilities at 6.82%, offices at 5.96%, and other sources at 3.3%.
