Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupted on Tuesday Afternoon; Status: Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday (16/1/2024) at 4:30 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 5 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height was approximately 1,000 meters above the peak (2,584 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to brown in color with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Seismic observations on January 16, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 25 volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 18.14-47.3 mm and durations of 36.9-179 seconds.

Then, there were 6 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 22-44 millimeters and durations of 24-43 seconds, and 26 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 8.14-47.3 millimeters and durations of 8-53 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 4-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 5-kilometer radius to the Northwest-North and Northeast.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 64 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara has had the most eruptions with 28 eruptions.
