State Electricity Company (PLN) has outlined a scenario for increasing new and renewable energy (NRE) capacity in its Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for the 2021-2030 period.

To achieve a "low carbon" scenario, or low carbon emissions, PLN plans to increase the NRE mix to 23% starting in 2025.

According to PLN's projections, the average investment needs for Indonesia's electricity sector will reach Rp128.6 trillion per year for the next decade (2021-2030), with PLN investing Rp72.4 trillion per year and the private sector Rp56.3 trillion per year.

PLN explains that the largest investment needs are in the 2021-2025 period. This is due to the many ongoing 35-gigawatt (GW) projects and the massive need for NRE power plant development to achieve the 23% target in 2025.

Investment needs in the 2026-2030 period are projected to decline as no significant additions of new power plants are required.

According to the RUPTL, PLN's investment needs will be met from internal funds, loans, and State Capital Participation (PMN).

PLN also projects to receive an average of Rp9 trillion per year in PMN investment during 2021-2030.
