Provinces with the Most Landslides in the Last 10 Years

Based on data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), West Java and Central Java are the provinces with the most landslides in the last decade.

These two provinces each experienced approximately 2,400 landslides between 2014 and 2023.

"If we divide it roughly on average, there are 240 landslides per year in West Java and Central Java," said Head of the BNPB's Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, in a press conference on the BNPB YouTube channel on Monday (March 5, 2024).

The provinces with the next highest number of landslides are East Java and Bali.

Here is a complete list of the 10 provinces with the most landslides during the 2014-2023 period:

1. West Java: 2,440 incidents
2. Central Java: 2,422 incidents
3. East Java: 642 incidents
4. Bali: 221 incidents
5. West Sumatra: 201 incidents
6. East Kalimantan: 190 incidents
7. South Sulawesi: 182 incidents
8. North Sumatra: 104 incidents
9. Yogyakarta Special Region: 93 incidents
10. Aceh: 82 incidents

Landslides in the last decade have resulted in numerous casualties.

In 2023 alone, landslides nationwide caused 132 deaths and 18,775 people to be displaced. This type of disaster also caused severe damage to residents' homes.

"Floods, extreme weather, and tornadoes usually result in minor damage. But landslides cause severe damage, sweeping away homes, and sometimes even destroying their foundations," said Abdul.

West Java is also the region with the highest number of houses damaged by landslides nationally. Between 2014 and 2023, 11,606 houses were damaged by landslides in that region.
