Indonesia Ranks Among the Top Three Most Disaster-Prone Countries in the World

The 2022 World Risk Report, released by Bündnis Entwicklung Hilft and the IFHV of Ruhr-University Bochum, shows that Indonesia is the third most disaster-prone country in the world.

Indonesia's Global Risk Index (WRI) score was 41.46 points in 2021. This high score reflects the numerous natural disasters that struck Indonesia in the past year. Recent examples include the eruption of Mount Semeru this month and the earthquake in Cianjur in November 2022.

Indonesia ranks below the Philippines and India, which had Global Risk Index scores of 46.82 and 42.31 points, respectively.

Indonesia's WRI score comprises five components. First, the *exposure* component scored 39.89 points, categorized as very high.

Second, the *vulnerability* component scored 43.10 points, categorized as high. This component considers the number of refugees, asylum seekers, and people affected by natural disasters in the past five years.

Third, the *susceptibility* component scored 33.48 points, categorized as high. Fourth, the *lack of coping capacities* component scored 50.67 points, categorized as very high.

Fifth, the *lack of adaptive capacities* component scored 47.19 points, categorized as medium.

Meanwhile, Colombia ranked below Indonesia with a 2021 WRI score of 38.37 points. Mexico followed with a score of 37.55 points last year.

Myanmar, Mozambique, and China had WRI scores of 35.49, 34.37, and 28.70 points, respectively. Bangladesh and Pakistan had scores of 27.90 and 26.75 points, respectively.
