Based on data from the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), Indonesia's forest area in 2022 reached 102.53 million hectares (ha).
The majority is located on the island of Papua, namely 33.12 million ha or 32.2% of the total forest cover area in Indonesia.
The next largest forest area is in Kalimantan, namely 31.10 million ha (30.3%).
Then in Sumatra, the forest area is 16.01 million ha (15.6%), and Sulawesi 10.86 million ha (10.6%).
Meanwhile, the forest area in Maluku is 6.37 million ha (6.2%), Java 2.77 million ha (2.7%), and Bali-Nusa Tenggara 2.3 million ha (2.2%).
The total area of Indonesia's forest cover in 2022 decreased by approximately 1.33 million ha or 0.7% compared to 2018.
During 2018-2022, a reduction in forest area occurred on all major islands of Indonesia. The most significant forest loss occurred on the island of Kalimantan.
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) in its report, *Integrated System of Indonesia's Environmental and Economic Accounts 2018-2022*, the reduction in forest area is due to various factors, namely natural events, deforestation, and reclassification of forest areas into non-forest areas.
However, BPS did not specify which factor was most dominant in the reduction of Indonesia's forest area.
