Mount Marapi Erupts on Monday Afternoon, Status Raised to Alert

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Monday, February 5, 2024, at 3:16 PM WIB. This is the second eruption in the last week.

According to information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the eruption was not visually observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.1 millimeters and a duration of 89 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's alert level is at Level III (Siaga/Alert). Observations from February 5, 2024, between 6:00 AM and 12:00 PM WIB, showed one eruption tremor with an amplitude of 7.1 millimeters and a duration of 13 seconds; one local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 2.1 millimeters, an S-P time of 4 seconds, and a duration of 20 seconds; and one distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 30.4 millimeters, an S-P time of 26.6 seconds, and a duration of 164 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi, as well as climbers, visitors, and tourists, to not enter or carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

In 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 151 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara has erupted the most (53 times), while Mount Marapi has erupted 30 times.
