South Sumatra is the hottest province in Indonesia. This is based on data from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), compiled by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) in their 2023 Indonesia Statistics report.
According to the report, throughout 2022 South Sumatra had an average temperature of 29.41 degrees Celsius (°C), the highest among all provinces.
Last year, the lowest temperature in South Sumatra was 20.4 °C, and the highest reached 36.2 °C.
The provinces with the next highest average temperatures are East Nusa Tenggara, Banten, Central Java, North Sumatra, Gorontalo, West Kalimantan, Riau, West Nusa Tenggara, and Aceh, as shown in the graph.
This report only presents Indonesian regional temperature data for 2022, without showing a comparison with the previous year.
Globally, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reported that in 2022, the Earth's surface temperature rose by 0.89 °C compared to the annual average for the period 1951-1980.
During the period 1981-2014, the Earth's surface temperature rose annually by between 0.1 °C and 0.7 °C compared to the annual average for the period 1951-1980. However, since 2015, the increase has consistently exceeded 0.8 °C.
"This warming trend is worrying. There are already signs that our climate is warming, forest fires are becoming more intense, storms are getting stronger, droughts are increasing, and sea levels are rising," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson in a press release on Thursday (12/1/2023).
