Global Warming Intensifies, Nearing 1.5 Degrees Celsius

Hundreds of United Nations (UN) member states have committed to preventing global warming.

This commitment is enshrined in the Paris Agreement, which aims to keep the increase in global temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius (°C) above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900).

However, in recent years, the rate of global warming has intensified, approaching this threshold.

According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), in the year 2000, the average global surface temperature had only increased by 0.7 °C compared to the pre-industrial era.

In subsequent years, the rate of temperature increase has risen. By April 2024, the average global surface temperature had already increased by 1.28 °C, as shown in the graph.

Based on this trend, C3S estimates that the global temperature increase will reach 1.5 °C in May 2033, approximately 9 years from now.

"1.5 °C of global warming feels like a distant reality, but it may be closer than you think," said the C3S team on its website.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), 1.5 °C of global warming could cause catastrophic droughts, trigger the extinction of various species, and disrupt global food production.
