Many animal species are threatened with extinction in the new Nusantara Capital City (IKN) region in East Kalimantan. This is recorded in the research article "Analysis of the Forest City Concept in the Nusantara Capital City Development Plan" in the *Bappenas Working Papers* journal (Volume 4 No. 1, 2021), written by a team of planners and experts from the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas: Dadang Jainal Mutaqin, Muhajah Babny Muslim, and Nur Gygiawati Rahayu.
"The IKN region and its surroundings are part of Kalimantan Island, one of the main biodiversity hotspots in Indonesia, characterized by a variety of animal and plant species, including several protected or important species," said Dadang et al.
"The survival of these animals and plants is increasingly threatened by the potential for habitat degradation," they continued.
Quoting Dadang et al.'s notes, here is a list of animal species in the IKN region that are on the "red list" or threatened with extinction based on the categorization of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN):
Order/family Primates:

"The IKN region faces significant challenges in the forestry sector, particularly forest degradation," said Dadang et al.
"Therefore, the forest city concept in the IKN development plan must consider and conserve forests and other protected areas to protect biodiversity, maximize carbon absorption, and support sustainable city development," they continued.
