Indonesia's Non-Oil and Gas Exports to Japan Lag Behind Those to the US and China

Indonesia's non-oil and gas exports to Japan in 2016 reached US$13.21 billion (Rp175 trillion), a slight increase of 0.89 percent from the previous year. Non-oil and gas exports to Japan accounted for only about 10.06 percent of total non-oil and gas exports in 2016, which amounted to US$131.34 billion, remaining below export values to the United States and China.

To enhance Indonesia-Japan bilateral trade relations, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Indonesia on January 15-16. In addition to bringing Japanese CEOs, PM Abe aimed to create business opportunities in irrigation and coastal conventions valued at 74 billion yen (approximately Rp8.6 trillion).

The United States remains the primary destination for Indonesia's non-oil and gas exports. The Central Bureau of Statistics recorded exports to the US in 2016 at US$15.68 billion (Rp208.6 trillion), a growth of 2.46 percent from the previous year. Non-oil and gas exports to the US accounted for approximately 11.94 percent of Indonesia's total non-oil and gas exports. Meanwhile, non-oil and gas exports to China in 2016 reached US$15.1 billion (Rp200.78 trillion), a significant increase of 13.9 percent from the previous year. Exports to China constituted 11.49 percent of Indonesia's total non-oil and gas exports.
