Renewable Energy Utilization in Power Plants Reaches 12%

The government continues to strive to increase the use of new and renewable energy (NRE) in power plant development. Besides reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the use of NRE can also improve sustainable energy resilience and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The realization of NRE use in national power plants up to the third quarter of 2018 has reached 12.3%. This composition will continue to be increased to 23% in 2025, in accordance with the National Energy General Plan. To date, coal still dominates the use of power plant fuel, namely 59.2%, as shown in the graph below. The addition of NRE power plant capacity (2015-Q1 2018) reached 1,696 MW, consisting of 959 MW of bioenergy power plants, 545 MW of geothermal power plants, and 192.1 MW of other power plants.

For information, the government targets an installed power plant capacity of 66 GW in 2018, but the realization up to the third quarter has reached 62.4 GW. The electrification ratio realization has reached 98.05% of the target of 97.5% by the end of this year. To ensure the availability of electricity that can support economic growth and equity, the government is expanding access to electricity through the addition of power plant capacity with the 35 GW power plant development program.
