What is Indonesia's National Energy Consumption?

The rise in Brent crude oil prices to US$85/barrel is one of the factors contributing to the weakening of the Indonesian Rupiah, pushing it above the Rp 15,000/US dollar level. The increase in oil prices will lead to a rise in Indonesia's fuel oil (BBM) imports, draining Bank Indonesia's foreign exchange reserves. This is because national energy consumption is dominated by BBM.

Data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) shows that Indonesia's energy consumption in 2017 reached 1.23 billion Barrels Oil Equivalent (BOE), a 9% increase from the previous year. Of this amount, BBM accounted for 356.33 million BOE, or 28.88% of total consumption. Biomass followed as the second largest energy source at 306.25 million BOE, or 24.82%. Biofuel consumption was relatively lower at 79.43 million BOE, or 6.44% of the total.

Based on its use, the largest portion of national energy consumption was for household use, reaching 382.94 million BOE, or 31% of the total. The transportation sector followed with 361.7 million BOE (approximately 29.31%), and the industrial sector consumed 273.86 million BOE (22.19%) of the total national energy consumption.
