Biodiesel Production Increased 3000 Percent from 2009-2018

Indonesia is one of the world's largest biodiesel producers. Abundant palm oil production supports the production of diesel fuel blended with vegetable oil (palm oil). The mandate for the use of diesel fuel with a 20% palm oil content (B20) has boosted domestic demand for biodiesel.

Based on data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), national biodiesel production in 2018 reached 6.17 million kiloliters (kl). This figure increased by 80.56% from the previous year's production and surged by more than 3,000% compared to 2009. Domestic consumption reached 3.75 million kl, while exports amounted to 1.79 million kl.

Meanwhile, biodiesel production up to November 2019 had reached 9.62 million kl. Domestic consumption amounted to 6.92 million kl, and exports were approximately 1.47 million kl. With the implementation of the B30 mandate, the Indonesian Biofuel Producers Association (APROBI) projects that biodiesel consumption will reach 9.4 million kl. With an installed capacity of 12 million kl and utilization of around 80-90%, the share for biodiesel exports will become increasingly thin.
