Indonesia's coal production in 2020 was recorded at 562.5 million tons, a 9% decrease from the previous year's 616.2 million tons.
Despite the decrease, Indonesia's coal production still accounted for 7.3% of the global total of 7.74 billion tons. Indonesia was also the second largest coal producer in the Asia-Pacific region last year.
China ranked first with coal production of 3.9 billion tons, or 66.37% of the Asia-Pacific total. Australia ranked below Indonesia with coal production of 476.7 million tons, or 8.11%.
Indonesia's coal reserves were recorded at 34.9 billion tons in 2020, equivalent to 3.25% of the world's total coal reserves of 1.074 billion tons. Globally, Indonesia's reserves of this fossil fuel are the seventh largest.
Indonesia's coal consumption reached 3.26 exajoules last year, accounting for 2.2% of global consumption, which totaled 151.42 exajoules.
Meanwhile, Indonesia's coal exports reached 8.51 exajoules last year, accounting for 26.8% of the global total of 31.78 exajoules.
This makes Indonesia the second largest coal exporter in the world, behind Australia, which exported 9.25 exajoules of coal.
