According to a Bloomberg NEF report, global investment in energy transition reached US$755 billion in 2021, a 27% increase from 2020.
Fifty percent of global energy transition investment in 2021 went to the renewable energy sector, reaching US$366 billion. This figure is up 6.5% from the previous year.
Investment in the electric transportation sector experienced the highest annual growth in 2021, reaching US$273 billion, or a 77% increase from the previous year.
Largest Investment from Asia Pacific
By region, the largest energy transition investment occurred in Asia Pacific, with US$368 billion, or 49% of the global total.
Investment in Asia Pacific experienced the highest annual growth among all regions, at 38% in 2021.
Investment in Asia Pacific's renewable energy sector increased, but the largest growth occurred in the electric transportation sector, which more than doubled in 2021.
Meanwhile, energy transition investment in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa grew by only 16% in 2021, reaching US$236 billion, or 31% of the global total. Renewable energy investment in this region remained stable, while electric transportation investment jumped 46% year-on-year.
Investment in the Americas grew by 21%, reaching US$150 billion in 2021, or 20% of the global total. Renewable energy investment in this region remained stable, while electric vehicle investment grew by 84% year-on-year.
