LSI Survey: Indonesian Public Rejects Fuel Price Hike

An Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI) survey report shows that the majority of Indonesian people reject the increase in fuel prices (BBM).

LSI Executive Director Djayadi Hanan stated that 58.7% of the public believe that fuel prices should not be raised, even though this could potentially increase the government's debt burden.

"Almost 60% of the public stated that fuel prices should not be raised, even if it will increase (the government's) debt," said Djayadi in an online survey presentation on Sunday (4/9/2022).

Meanwhile, only 26.5% of the public said they agreed with the fuel price increase. They argued that since current global fuel prices are increasing, fuel prices must be raised to reduce the burden on the state budget (APBN).

This survey was conducted on 1,220 respondents from August 13-21, 2022. The survey targeted all Indonesian citizens with voting rights in general elections; those aged 17 or older, or those who were married at the time of the survey.

The survey population was selected randomly using multistage random sampling, with a margin of error of approximately 2.9% at a 95% confidence level.

For information, the government officially announced that the price of Pertalite increased from Rp7,650 to Rp10,000 per liter. Meanwhile, the price of Solar increased from Rp5,150 to Rp6,800 per liter.

The price of non-subsidized Pertamax was also raised to Rp14,500 from Rp12,500. These prices took effect on Saturday (3/9/2022) at 2:30 PM WIB.
