The US Energy Information Administration (US EIA) report notes the trend of oil transportation in the Malacca Strait during the 2020-first semester 2025. This transportation includes crude oil, condensate, and petroleum products.

The volume ranged from 22 million to 24 million barrels per day during that period.

In the latest data for the first semester of 2025, the transportation volume reached 23.2 million barrels per day. This figure is 3.11% higher than the full-year average in 2024, which was 22.5 million barrels per day.

The transportation volume in the first semester of 2025 is equivalent to 29% of the total global maritime oil flow.

The US EIA explains that the Malacca Strait connects the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. It is the shortest sea route between oil and natural gas suppliers from the Middle East to East Asia and Southeast Asia.

The US EIA adds that this strait is also the largest chokepoint in the world in terms of oil transit volume. Crude oil generally accounts for just over 70% of the total oil flow through this strait each year, while the rest comes from petroleum products.

Most of the crude oil flow passing through the Malacca Strait is destined for East Asian countries from the Middle East.

China accounted for 48% of the import volume passing through this strait in the first semester of 2025.

"The United States also exports and imports crude oil passing through the Malacca Strait," says the US EIA.

In the first semester of 2025, the US was recorded to have shipped 800,000 barrels per day of crude oil and condensate from the Atlantic coast through the Malacca Strait to East Asia, while the Pacific coast of the US received about 200,000 barrels per day of cargo through this strait, mainly from the Middle East.
