According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Indonesia's average natural gas production in 2021 reached 6,667 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD).
In 2021, the company with the largest natural gas production capacity in Indonesia was BP Berau Ltd. This subsidiary of the British company British Petroleum (BP) produced an average of 1,312 MMSCFD, approximately 19.6% or almost one-fifth of the national natural gas production capacity last year.
Based on information from its official website, BP Berau Ltd. operates the Tangguh LNG project, which consists of six integrated natural gas fields in the Wiriagar, Berau, and Muturi Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs) areas in Bintuni Bay, West Papua.
"Tangguh LNG is operated by BP Berau Ltd. Other BP subsidiaries involved in the development of Tangguh LNG are BP Muturi Holdings BV, BP Wiriagar Ltd, and Wiriagar Overseas Ltd, giving BP a 40.22% ownership stake in Tangguh LNG," BP stated on its website.
"Tangguh LNG began production in 2009, just four years after obtaining approval from the Indonesian government. Tangguh is now operating at full capacity, and development is underway to add a new LNG plant at Tangguh, namely Train 3," it continued.
According to the Ministry of ESDM, the Tangguh LNG Train 3 construction project cost approximately US$8.9 billion in investment and is projected to produce 3.8 million tons of LNG per year. This project is scheduled for completion in March 2023.
"The production from Train 3 will be prioritized to meet domestic gas needs, including for PT PLN (Persero) power plants," the Ministry of ESDM said in its press release on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.
