Job absorption in the renewable energy sector has continued to grow over the past 10 years, driven by the increasing need for energy transition and climate change mitigation.

According to the report, the global renewable energy sector was only able to absorb 7.3 million jobs in 2012. In subsequent years, the number continued to increase, as shown in the graph.

The increase continued even during the pandemic, reaching 12.7 million jobs in 2021. Cumulatively, from 2012 to 2021, jobs in the global renewable energy sector grew by 73%.

"Amidst numerous challenges, the renewable energy sector has remained resilient and has become a reliable job creation engine. I urge governments worldwide to design industrial policies that promote the expansion of decent renewable energy jobs," said IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera in a press release on Thursday (22/9/2022).

"(Renewable energy industrial policies) will not only create new business and job opportunities for local communities, but also support supply chain reliability and contribute to energy security," he continued.

According to IRENA and ILO data, of all global renewable energy sector workers, 42% are in China, followed by the European Union at 10%, Brazil at 10%, the United States at 7%, and India at 7%.

"Beyond these figures, there is also an increased focus on job quality and working conditions in the renewable energy sector to ensure decent and productive work," said ILO Director-General Guy Ryder.

"I urge governments, workers' organizations, and employers to remain strongly committed to the sustainable energy transition, which is crucial for future jobs," he added.
