According to PLN's report, in 2021 Indonesia had 421 renewable energy power plants with a total installed capacity of 4,189 megawatts (MW).
This amounts to only 6.5% of the total installed capacity of national power plants, which reached 64,553 MW last year.
Here is a breakdown of Indonesia's installed renewable energy capacity in 2021 by type:
* Hydroelectric Power Plants (PLTA): 3,504.02 MW
* Mini-hydro Power Plants (PLTM): 37.68 MW
* Micro-hydro Power Plants (PLTMH): 45.62 MW
* Geothermal Power Plants (PLTP): 579.26 MW
* Solar Power Plants (PLTS): 21.34 MW
* Wind Power Plants (PLTB): 0.47 MW
* Biomass Power Plants (PLTBm): 0.5 MW
These power plants are spread across PLN's Regional Business Units (UIW), Generation Business Units (UIK), Generation and Transmission Business Units (UIKL), and Regional Units (UID) in various provinces.
The largest renewable energy power plants are located in Java, in the operational area of PT Indonesia Power, with a total installed capacity of 1,499.61 MW. This consists of 1,119.52 MW of PLTA, 3.33 MW of PLTM, and 376.76 MW of PLTP.
Although the figure reaches thousands of MW, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Indonesia's installed renewable energy capacity is still very small, only 0.3% of the total potential available. IRENA considers the lack of investment to be a major obstacle in this sector.
"Significant barriers to driving Indonesia's energy transition are funding and investment. Funding sources need to be broadened and local financing capacity needs to be increased," said IRENA in its *Indonesia Energy Transition Outlook* report released in October 2022.
In this regard, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir plans to develop a financing strategy for renewable energy through a merger of Pertamina, PLN, and Star Energy.
"We have three geothermal companies in Pertamina, PLN, and another one, Star Energy, under the Ministry of Finance. I want to merge these into a single entity. We want to be like Pertamina Geothermal Energy so that we have access to funding through going public," said Erick at the *Special Event Road to G20* at the IPB International Convention Center in Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday (25/10/2022).
