According to a report by Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia's nickel exports in the first half of 2022 reached 297,760 tons, valued at US$2.45 billion.

Nickel export volume surged approximately 574% (year-on-year), while the export value grew by 462% (year-on-year) compared to the first half of 2021.

In the first half of 2022, Indonesia exported the most nickel to China, with a volume of 233,800 tons and a value of US$1.71 billion.

This export volume to China accounted for approximately 78% of the total national nickel export volume. Its value represented 69% of the total national export value.

The Indonesian government only permits the export of processed nickel and has banned the export of raw nickel ore since early January 2020.

This policy banning raw nickel ore exports was subsequently challenged by the European Union at the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the investigation is still ongoing this year.
